EU Commission Proposes Strengthening Frontex with More Resources and Roles

The European Commission has proposed additional resources and expanded roles for Frontex to enhance protection of EU external borders and coordinate returns effectively.

On 27 October 2026, the European Commission proposed measures to increase resources and expand the mandate of Frontex. The proposal aims to strengthen Frontex's role as the central actor in protecting the EU's external borders.

Under the proposal, Frontex will take a more active role in organizing returns and quickly responding to crises. Additionally, new regulations to digitalize the return, readmission, and reintegration processes have been suggested.

This initiative marks a significant step to enhance security within the Schengen Area and improve migration management effectiveness. If accepted, border control and coordination across Europe will be significantly enhanced.
